A guide to Prague holidays

Food & drink in Prague

In Prague, you’re never far from a mouth-watering snack. Perhaps the most famous is Trdelinik, or ‘chimney cake’ – a hollow, fluffy cake with a crispy crunch. You’ll find a variety of fillings on offer, including chocolate spread and ice-cream – an indulgent treat on your Prague city break. Schnitzel is wildly popular with Prague locals, and a must-try during your stay in the city. While you’ll find this breaded meat dish all over Europe, in Prague it’s made with pork neck, making it extra-succulent. Order a side of potato salad for a hearty and traditional dinner.

Beer is a big deal in Prague, so don’t miss out on sampling a couple of local favourites including Pilsner Urquell and Budvar. Fancy something a bit stronger? Try a shot or two of Becherovka, a herb-and-spice infused liquor – perfect after a good meal. For a toned-down version, ask for BeTon, a cocktail made with Becherovka and tonic water.

Must-see sights in Prague

Prague Castle is one of the city’s most visited attractions. This impressive fortress started life in the 9th century when it was home to the Kings of Bohemia. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thousand of global tourists visit the castle each year to marvel at its gothic architecture and 12th century palaces. Charles Bridge is another icon of the city, a 14th century gothic structure connecting Old Town with Lesser Town. Along the length of the bridge you’ll see a series of baroque statues, and a number of old-style streetlamps, lending the bridge a fairy-tale atmosphere.

The Spanish Synagogue in Prague’s Jewish Quarter is well worth taking your time over. Described as the most beautiful synagogue in Europe, the interior of this grand building is decorated with thousands of Moorish-inspired mosaics. Before you leave, pay a visit to the excellent Jewish Museum next door.

Hidden gems in Prague

Letna Park: For high-up views away from the crowds, take the 15 minute walk from Charles Bridge to Letna Park. You’ll discover a giant green space with tree-lined pathways – a great way to cool off in summer. The park also happens to contain one of Prague’s best beer gardens, so you get to enjoy a cold pilsner as you look out over the city.

Visit the library: You might not think to visit a library when touring a place like Prague, but the city’s Municipal Library is more than worth your time. At the entrance, you’ll spot a giant tunnel of books that appears to be never-ending – a brilliant optical illusion. There’s also a stylish café serviing coffee, wine and snacks, and an art gallery – this is not your typical library.

Trip to the theatre: If you’re visiting Prague with kids – and even if you’re not – the Image Black Light Theatre is a unique, fun experience in the heart of Old Town. All ages will be enthralled by this wordless show full of dance, theatre and audience interaction. As a bonus, it’s right across from Prague Lego Museum – the largest private Lego collection in the world.
