Food & drink in Berlin

No matter your taste or dietary habits, Berlin has something to offer everyone when it comes to food. Vegans and vegetarians certainly aren’t ignored, with a plethora of speciality restaurants and dishes to try. While they offer a number of Chinese and Middle Eastern inspired dishes, those who want to try traditional German food should opt for Kartoffelpuffer. This vegetarian pan-fried pancake made with flour, eggs, onion and grated potato, although you can find vegan-friendly versions too. Those who aren’t vegetarian can add meat, although they’re usually served with garlic sauce or sweet applesauce, depending on what you crave. Looking for a snack on the go? Pretzels are sold on practically every corner in Berlin, with a plethora of street stalls, cafes and bakeries selling the treat. Whether you prefer sweet or savoury, you’ll find a pretzel to suit your tastes.

Top attractions in Berlin

Berlin is a contemporary city, yet has a fascinating history that is represented throughout its centre. You can’t visit without going to see the Memorial of the Berlin Wall. While some of the wall is now a gallery of amazing graffiti, the memorial hosts much of what’s left of the preserved wall. With informative signs and small exhibitions within the walls, it’s a humbling way of learning the intriguing history surrounding this modern city. Beautiful and bold, there’s no ignoring the Brandenburg Gate. Built in the 18th Century, the neoclassical monument includes immense pillars and intricate designs. Amazing, colourful designs are projected onto it on special occasions, but it’s well worth admiring regardless. Symbolising peace and unity, it’s now an iconic part of the city.

Things to do in Berlin

A melting pot of culture, Berlin is never boring. Once you’ve seen the most iconic attractions, keep yourself entertained with some of these popular things to do it in the city.

Aquadom & Berlin Sea Life Centre: Berlin is home to an immense aquarium filled with a number of amazing, insightful exhibitions. With a 25-metre tall aquarium – the Aquadom – built around a working transparent elevator, it’s far from your regular aquarium. As well as the incredible elevator experience, there are a plethora of other marine attractions. This includes a ray tank where you can see the stingrays being fed, as well as sharks, wreckfish and jellyfish.

Explore the city by bike: The city is beautiful and big, so the best way to explore as much as possible is with a bike. Biking is an excellent way of seeing more of this Berlin due to its flat terrain and charming canal paths. There’s an abundance of places where you can hire bikes, and it’s very much a popular way of getting around. The canals and city centre are a great place to start, but make sure you go and see some of the attractions listed in the other section.

Visit Museum Island: As the name suggests, Museum Island is a section of Berlin that hosts five intriguing museums. Whether you want to admire contemporary or be transported into the past, Museum Island is a must-visit for those who fancy themselves as culture vultures. Pergamon Museum is a particularly popular choice and is one of the most visited museums in all of Europe. It holds a wealth of archaeological finds and treasures from the past.
