Food & drink in Budapest

Chicken paprikas is one of Budapest’s stand-out dishes, found on nearly every menu in the city. This tasty dish of slow-cooked chicken comes with plenty of paprika and a creamy, moreish sauce. You’ll often find it served alongside nokedi – Hungarian dumplings made with pasta. Langos is another Budapest institution you can’t miss on your city break. Similar to pizza (but deep-fried) this late-night snack comes topped with cheese and sour cream – the ultimate street food. You’ll even find sweet versions with chocolate spread and ice-cream. You’ll find plenty of options when it comes to alcohol in Budapest. The most famous is palinka, a fruit brandy usually drunk before dinner, or sometimes as a digestif after a meal. At 40% abv and above, this local firewater is sure to warm you up when visiting Budapest in the colder months!

Sightseeing in Budapest

Begin your sightseeing adventure at Buda Castle. This impressive fortress perched above the Danube was built in the 13th century and has undergone a turbulent history. To get there, you can either walk up the steep incline, or take the funicular to the castle entrance. Next, cross the river to St Stephen’s Basilica, a church built in 1905. Taking over 50 years to complete, this mega-church is the biggest in Budapest, standing 96 metres tall. After admiring the ornate interior, climb to the top of the tower for unbeatable views of the city. Finally, head to the Hungarian Parliament Building. This grand structure by the river is an impressive sight – especially when lit up at night. It’s possible to tour the interior, but only on an official sightseeing tour – grab your same-day tickets at the visitor’s centre, or book online.

Family fun in Budapest

Underneath Buda Castle, there’s a network of tunnels, open to the public. Kids and adults alike are sure to love this medieval labyrinth, where atmospheric fog and lighting make for an eerie underground experience. There’s even an ‘after dark’ tour, lit only by oil lamps – not for the easily spooked! Inquisitive kids will have a blast at the Palace of Wonders, an interactive science museum 10 minute’s north of Buda Castle. Top highlights include Hall of Illusions, an immersive 9D cinema, and Space Station. Adults can unwind at the café – or join in the fun! If your family is hooked on games, they’ll love Flippermuzeum – Europe’s best interactive pinball museum. There are over 140 machines in this family fun zone, including antiques dating back to the early days of pinball. The best part? You get to play on them all!
