Siena is just as captivating, with one of Europe's most beautiful town squares and the legendary Palio horse race that's been running for centuries. Most flights land in Pisa thanks to its handy budget airline links, but don't rush off – the Leaning Tower is well worth sticking around for. We'd always recommend adding on Lucca too, with its charming walled old town, or San Gimignano, famous for its striking medieval towers – both make brilliant day trips if you're basing yourself in Florence or Pisa.
