Enjoy the Italian tradition of an aperitivo before dinner, which consists of a pre-meal beverage (usually alcoholic). A light snack can also be ordered, such as cheeses and cured meats – it’s the perfect way to start an evening. As well as trying out this tradition for yourself, plan to tuck into a variety of dishes during your stay in Sorrento. As the town is situated on the coastline, expect to find a range of tasty seafood dishes available. Frittura di Calamari e Gamberi is a popular choice featuring lightly battered squid and shrimp. Of course, authentic Italian pizza is also available with delicate light crusts and fresh cheeses. If you can find it, be sure to sample some Treccia cheese that looks incredible as it is a woven into a plait and tastes amazing when paired with bread, pasta or salami.

Sorrento is situated on a clifftop, therefore it doesn’t boast your typical beaches. Instead, you’ll find gorgeous marinas to spend an afternoon enjoying the water and stunning coves to explore by kayak or breaststroke. Bagni della Regina Giovanna is one example of a stunning coved area to swim and bask in the sun, but be sure to take some sturdy shoes along with you to make the trip down to the cove. Leonelli’s Beach is another popular spot, with its own restaurant and the opportunity to rent a lounger or table for the day.

When staying in Sorrento, there’s no end of activities to squeeze into your itinerary. When you’re not soaking up the sun or tucking into the food served up by the welcoming eateries in the town centre, try one of these things to do.

Take a walk to Villa Comunale: Navigate the winding paths (or take the lift if you fancy a rest) leading to Villa Comunale, a stunning park offering incredible views of Sorrento’s marina and out over the Gulf of Naples. You’ll also be able to see Mount Vesuvius rising to a point in the distance. Plan to visit this stunning spot at sunset and watch the horizon change from blue to flame red to yellow as the sun passes below the water.

Explore the Archeological Museum: Learn more about Sorrento’s past, with an afternoon in its museum dedicated to archaeology (Museo Archeologico Territoriale della Penisola Sorrentina). The museum itself is a pretty structure with its own gardens and features a range of items discovered near the town that date from prehistorical times up to the era of the Romans.

See the city walls: Originally constructed by the Greeks during their rule of Sorrento, parts of the city walls still stand today and have lived through centuries of change. The walls once had five entrances and provided the townspeople protection from invasions and attacks. Take a look around them to appreciate their age and the part they played in the city’s history.
