Approx 2km in length, the beach of Roses runs from the harbour down to Santa Margarida. Although it goes by three different names, due to its distinct trio of areas, each one is as beautiful as the next. We’re talking flawless expanses of sun-drenched coast combined with deep blue Mediterranean ocean, the kind you’d expect to find on a postcard. It’s fine sand gently slopes into the water making it a dream come true for toddlers and anxious swimmers. Although its shoreline is the showstopper, Roses is more than just beaming sunshine and toe-sinking sands. In fact, the resort has its own festivals including the Sons del Mon, which focuses on the music and wine culture in Spain. Not to mention its impressive line-up of ruins including the Megalithic Complex and Trinidad Castle.

Tour the Fortress of Roses: Enchanting is the word most commonly used to describe this ancient delight in the heart of Roses. It’s one of the most famous monuments in the resort thanks to its archaeological sites from the Roman, Greek and Visigothic era. Dating back to the 11th century, when a wall was built to protect the monastery of Roses from potential pirate attacks, uncover a treasure trove of history. Guided tours are highly recommended as you walk through the military ruins that are left standing today. However, in summer it’s best to pre-book to avoid disappointment.

Head for the natural parks: Home to two of the main natural parks in Catalonia, Cabo de Creus and Aiguamolls de l’Empordà, you’ll certainly be at one with nature. Surrounded by blooming plant life and thousands of migratory species, get lost in its tropics. There are several hiking routes too from easy strolls to intensive ascents for expert climbers, the choice is yours. Cabo de Creus is one for water lovers and is one of Roses’ top excursions thanks to its encircling islets and picturesque coves.
