With nearly 200 beaches dotted along the rugged 120km coastline, Costa Brava is made for beach holidays. From the popular resort towns of Tossa de Mar and Lloret de Mar to hidden gems such as Calella de Palafrugell, this captivating strip of coast has something for everyone. Art lovers will know Costa Brava as the birthplace of Salvidor Dali – the famous painter was born in Figueres, a traditional town just an hour’s train ride from Barcelona. Girona is another top attraction in the area – this stunning medieval town is packed with photo-worthy sights around each corner. You’ve also got the world-famous city of Barcelona on your doorstep. It’s easy to combine your beach getaway with trips to this magical city, with frequent trains and busses running from all the major resort towns. If you’d prefer to stay put, you’ll find tons to keep you occupied, including water sports, coastal walks and lazy days on the beach.
Food & drink in Costa Brava
If you’re a fan of fresh seafood, you’ve come to the right place! Don’t leave without trying dorada, or seam bream – you’ll find this tasty fish either grilled or salt baked in restaurants up and down the coast. Dorada goes perfectly with a glass of chilled cava, the popular sparkling wine produced in the Catalan region. When it comes to tapas, you can expect to find a variety of seafood, such as musclos al vapor (mussels in white wine) and suso (small fish, battered then fried). Don’t worry if you don’t eat meat – there are veggie options too, including pa amb tomaquet (toasted bread with tomato and olive oil) and asparagus croquettes. Pudding fans – you won’t feel left out in Costa Brava. Some of our favourites are Crema Catalan, a caramelised flan with cinnamon and citrus, xuixo, (pronounced ‘shoo-shoo’) a deep-fried pasty filled with custard, and churros, crispy doughnuts dipped in chocolate.
