A guide to Tigaki holidays

Food & drink in Tigaki

The blend of Mediterranean and Greek influences makes Kos a hidden gem on the food scene. But Tigaki alone has no shortage of five-star restaurants with menus overflowing with trademark island specialities including posa cheese which is a goat’s cheese matured in red wine and pitaridia, a homemade broth which resembles the taste of lasagne. Fresh fish is a must-try with octopus being a delicacy, Amvrosia in particular will wow holidaymakers with its lightly fried red mullet drizzled in an olive and lemon sauce. Check out Alikes for an authentic dolmades, each household and region has its own variation of this classic dish, but traditionally it’s made up of hollowed-out vegetables stuffed with mince and baked in the oven. Highly rated drinking venues in Tigaki are Palapanis and Kivotos, both serve the iconic Ouzo which is a dry type of aperitif that has an aniseed flavour. But herbal teas and iced coffee are widely enjoyed in this resort too.

Tranquility is what you’ll get at this sun-baked shore, but there’s still plenty of watersports to spice up your day. Snorkelling is also highly recommended thanks to the exotic marine life, wreckages and hidden coves below the surface. If you truly want to get away from it all, head to the western section of the coastline and you can place yourself amidst its colossal dunes. History lesson in Kos Town: With the island’s capital city just down the road, it only makes sense to take advantage of your setting. Waiting is Asklepieion easily one of the most visited landmarks in Kos which was built in honour of the Hippocrates. Speaking of Hippocrates, just outside the Castle of the Knights this famous tree lies with its 500-year-old roots. Legend has it the original tree stood there 2,400 years ago! Looking back at its Roman and Venetian roots is the Archaeological Museum. Among its more notable treasures are beautiful mosaics, statues, as well as pottery from the Asklepion site and a statue of Hippocrates. When you’re filled with knowledge, check out the town’s weekly market for handcrafted goods and fare.

Lido Waterpark: Easily one of the top waterparks in Kos, expect multi-slide racers and hydro tubes among some of its many highlights. Top rides include the Space Bowl which is a high-speed enclosed shoot with a seven-metre dip and the Black Hole, famed for sinking swimmers into darkness before splashing into the swimming pool below. Families will find the lazy river relaxing with rubber rings that hold two people allowing you to float as a duo. But for tiny swimmers, the interactive kid’s area should be your go-to. Enjoy six water pistols, swivel buckets and waterfalls.
