Food & drink in Paphos

The cuisine in Paphos combines the best of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavours. Expect to find fresh salads, juicy kebabs and veggies cooked on the grill. You’ll discover locally made cheese and some outstanding regional wines. We’ve chosen our top island eats for your next Paphos holiday. Halloumi cheese is found on menus all over Cyprus and it’s a favourite in the Paphos region. You’ll find it in salads, with olives as a starter, and grilled on skewers with mushrooms and tomatoes. It’s also eaten as a side dish with traditional meals such as resi – a slow cooked lamb hotpot.

Originating in Paphos, pafitiko loukaniko is a flavourful pork sausage made with a variety of spices and herbs. The sausage is left to mature in dry red and white wine from the local area. It can be eaten without being cooked, or fried. Being on the coast, you’ll find plenty of options for fresh sea food in Paphos. Head harbourside for the catch of the day where you can choose from mussels, squid, octopus, tuna, and much more. Pair your meal with a white wine like Fikardos, or the island beer Keo.

Beautiful beaches in Paphos

There are more than 30 miles of coastline and 27 beaches in Paphos – many of which have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag. With so many of the best beaches on this side of the island you’ll be spoiled for choice. We’ve chosen a few we’re sure you’ll love. Coral Bay is the go-to beach for holidaymakers in Paphos, and with good reason. This gorgeous stretch of sand lines clear azure waters, ideal for swimming and snorkelling. You’ll find plenty of sun loungers, parasols and showers. Take it easy under the sizzling Cyprus sun, or get your thrills on the water with a parasail ride.

Polis Municipal Beach is a hidden gem in the northern part of Paphos, offering a seaside haven away from the crowds. The water here is calm and safe for little ones, while behind the beach you’ll find a pretty tree-lined walkway with access to bars and cafes. Lara Beach on the Akamas Peninsula is completely untouched due to the turtles nesting on its golden sands. There are no facilities here, so be sure to bring a towel and picnic, along with a snorkel – the ocean is perfect for spotting colourful fish.

With a history steeped in mythology and foreign rule, you’ll find plenty of amazing historical sites in Pathos. Step back in time and marvel at ancient burial grounds, temples and churches – there’s enough here to get everyone excited. We’ve picked a few can’t-miss attractions in the area.

Tombs of the Kings: The Tombs of the Kings is an awe-inspiring ancient burial site, just 2km from the harbour in Paphos. The 7 underground chambers were built as the final resting place for noblemen some 2000 years ago, and each has their own character, with various columns and frescoes adorning the tombs.

Kato Archaeological Park: The ruins here are a sight to behold. You’ll discover intricate Roman mosaics depicting mythical creatures, grand villas and even a fortress. The 2nd century theatre is a great place for photos, with a whitewashed lighthouse in the distance.

Painted churches, Troodos Mountains: Head inland for a day of treasure hunting! There are 10 painted churches to find in the mountains, each featuring colourful byzantine frescoes. The stone buildings with sloped roofs make them look more like barns or farmhouses, but inside, you’ll find an amazing display of art dating back to the 11th century.
