Souvlaki is a must-try on your Cyprus holiday. Tender meat is grilled on skewers and then added to large, thin pitas. This is topped with fresh tomato, onion and cucumber. There’s a vegetarian version too, using halloumi, the famous Cypriot cheese. Afelia should be high on your list when holidaying in Cyprus. Small pieces of pork are marinated in wine and coriander seeds, then slow cooked. This succulent dish is often served with patates antinahtes, baby potatoes cooked in olive oil. Another top meal is koupepia. These are young vine leaves, filled with rice and minced meat and served with a tomato sauce. They can be eaten on their own, or as part of a meze platter, and go well with a glass of wine from a local vineyard – Persofoni is popular with the locals.

The beaches in Cyprus are amazingly varied. There’s everything from black volcanic sand, to pebbled coves and long stretches of golden sand. Not far from Paphos, the golden sands of Coral Bay are popular with families who appreciate the gently sloping beach and calm shallow waters. You’ll find all the facilities you could need for a top day out to the beach, including showers, lifeguards and beachside cafes. Hidden away on the west coast, you’ll find Lara Bay, a breeding ground for loggerhead turtles. This tranquil bay takes some getting to – a hike is involved, but you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful and uncrowded stretch of sand.

Tombs of the Kings, Paphos: The Tombs of the Kings should be your first stop on any history tour of Cyprus. This impressive underground burial chamber is carved entirely from rock and was built in the 4th century B.C. as a final resting place for early aristocrats. The tombs are well preserved and well worth taking your time over.

Kourion, Limassol: The ancient city of Kourion provides a riveting look into Greco-Roman life. You’ll find intricate mosaics, Roman temples and monuments built for the Greek gods. There’s an ancient wrestling school, a gladiator practice ground and a beautifully reconstructed amphitheatre overlooking the ocean.

Agios Lazaros, Larnaca: This captivating church was built in the 9th century to house the tomb of Lazarus, the biblical figure brought back from the dead by Jesus. During a fire 50 years ago, human remains thought to be those of Lazarus were discovered in a marble sarcophagus, and remain on display to the public.

Fasouri Watermania, Limassol: One of the world’s top water parks, Watermania provides a thrilling day out for all ages. Mini swimmers will love the paddle boats and shallow pools, while older kids and adults get to take on the mighty kamikaze. For a break from the action, you’ll find sun loungers by the pool, and plenty of cafes for cooling refreshments.

Zenobia wreck, Larnaca coast: One of the best wreck dives in the world, the Zenobia is a sunken ferry home to an impressive array of marine life. Expect to swim with barracuda, tuna, turtles and groupers. The calm, current-free water makes the site ideal for all qualified divers.

Troodos Mountains: Hiking the 3km Kaledonia trail is an exciting way to see the island. You’ll pass through cedar forest as you follow the path of the river. Stop for a break at the waterfall – the highest in Cyprus – before reaching the summit at Platres, a stunning mountaintop village.
