Nerja’s location next to the coast means that fresh, locally caught fish is a regular on the menu – especially squid and octopus. Chiringuitos line the beaches and are the ideal place for seafood lovers to head. You’ll find a range of cuisines on offer here but two of the most traditional dishes are de la doncella which is red mullet and pescaito frito which is fried fish. As you might expect, tapas and paella are popular here. The best place to sample the latter is at Ayo’s which is situated on Burriana beach and known for this rice-based dish. To wash it all down, you can enjoy the traditional Spanish drink sangria. Visit Cochran’s Terrace Bar – which is actually an Irish bar and situated right next to the Balcon de Europe with views across the ocean.

There are almost 10 miles of coastline in Nerja, Here soft, sugar-white sand leads down to the crystal clear water that sparkles in the sun, inviting you to jump in and take a dip or try the watersports on offer. You might like to experience the thrill of water skiing or head down and discover the world beneath the surface as you go scuba diving. The most popular and famous beach is Playa de Burriana. This is the best place for sea kayaking, which can take you to other popular sandy spots such as Caleta de Maro – a secluded cove often rated as the best in Spain.

Another popular part of the coastline is La Torrecilla. This Blue Flag beach has a beach library where you can borrow books, magazines and newspapers to enjoy while you are here. If you want to avoid the crowds then head for Playa el Salon, which is situated beneath Balcón de Europa.

The beaches are a huge draw for visitors heading to Nerja. But, when you aren’t enjoying the sun-drenched shoreline, there is plenty to do in this picturesque town.

Enjoy the view from Balcón de Europa: You won’t want to miss the Balcon de Europa while you are in Nerja and don’t worry, it’s hard to – it is the town’s most iconic landmark. The Balcony of Europe is situated high up on a clifftop, boasting panoramic views of the coastline. In the 9th century it was actually the site of a watchtower. There are a number of telescopes here, if you want to take a closer look at what you can see. You’ll also see a statue to King Alfonso II, who is believed to have given the balcony its name. Depending on when you visit, there may well be a concert or fiesta taking place here.

Hike the Rio Chillar route: Don’t forget your walking boots because there are plenty of opportunities for hiking in Nerja. One of the most popular places, which is also particularly suitable if you have children with you, is the Rio Chillar route. This one takes you through Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park. You’ll walk across rivers and alongside pools, that are ideal for cooling off in, eventually coming to waterfalls.
