Rhodes Town is bursting with eating-out opportunities, with traditional island dishes, modern twists on those and international cuisine all easily available. Some of the best restaurants are arguably found in the new town area away from the mass of daytrippers. Olives, fresh fish and seafood and Mediterranean flavours are plentiful. Don’t be surprised to see goat on some menus. Desserts with nuts, fruits and honey are popular. You may find local cheeses, particularly from the island’s mountainous regions.

Set on the northern peninsula of the island Rhodes Town has its own wide sand and pebble beach in the new town area. The shore is well served with sunbeds and nearby cafes, bars and restaurants. The Elli Beach has beautifully clear water and an interesting aquarium set upon it. A popular attraction is the high rise floating diving platform in the sea. It’s also lined with hotels and all kinds of water sports are on offer. Some Rhodes Town hotels have their own almost exclusive areas of coastline. The Ixia Beach on the west coast is famous among windsurfers and kitesurfers.

Meander through the Old Town: The historic part of Rhodes Town is exquisite and bustles with visitors. It is a mass of twisty streets full of restaurants and shops and cobbled alleyways. Impressive ramparts surround this section of the town and are dotted with imposing gates.

Mandraki Harbour: The attractive harbour on the east of the new town is well worth a little of your time. The harbour itself, lined with cafes and packed with plush yachts and simple fishing boats, makes for a nice excursion. There are also regular boats leaving for neighbouring islands and some of Rhodes’ other popular resorts.

Rhodes Aquarium: In an interesting underground setting, Rhodes Aquarium displays a range of creatures from the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean sea. Injured sea turtles and seals are also cared for here. Set within the Hydrobiological Station, the ragged-walled aquarium and seashell decoration gives the impression of an underwater sea cave.
