Famed for its 14th century Venetian harbour, alongside its Egyptian and Ottoman influences – Chania is a time capsule of history. Situated on Crete’s north coast, this resort is dominated by an old lighthouse, fort and a duo of beaches. When dusk falls, the waterfront comes alive with cosy cocktail spots, larger-than-life clubs and gastronomic restaurants. In the centre you’ve got the Old Town decorated with medieval architecture, while over at the harbour there’s fine dining eateries and luxury yachts – no wonder it’s the second largest city on the island.
Food & drink in Chania
It’s easy to see why Cretan food has gained such a worldwide reputation with its innovative cuisine tantalising your taste buds. Local highlights include chaniotiko boureki, also referred to as zucchini potato pie. Another must-try is ntakos, a slice of double baked bread topped with tomato, Cretan cream cheese, olives, oregano and salt. Of course, other celebrated Greek dishes can be found here too such as grilled meat, gyros and cheese pie. And for picky eaters, there’s a helping of Mediterranean, Italian and Indian restaurants on standby – we’d recommend Valentino Pasta & Grill for variety and high quality dining. Fancy options include Anopoli Tavern and it’s rabbit stew, or for light bites and meze platters check out Rustic Garden Greek Tapas. Try new concoctions at Peacock Tail Bar, whose signature cocktails speak for themselves. Bororo, on the other hand, is a rock bar serving the country’s delicacy Ouzo by shot glass only.
